Modern Games

Modern Games have usually a known inventor and are often modifications of traditional games. The rules are handed down by written records rather than by talking. All these games are of recent origin and less than 120 years old (four generations).

Traditional Games

The origin of traditional games is clouded in mystery.

Their distribution is limited to Africa, some parts of Asia, the Caribbean and parts of South America. Mancala is also known in Oceania on the island of New Guinea and the Mariana Islands. Today, more and more traditional games are also enjoyed outside traditional communities in Europe and North America.

They are part of traditional folk culture (customs, arts and crafts) and usually passed on orally.

Other Mancala-like Games

Many other games have rules that are similar to Mancala Games. There is no consensus among Mancala experts whether the following games are Mancala variants or should rather be considered as something else. In particular, this is true for numerous httpStacking Games.
